Where to report workplace concerns by state.

Not every workplace issue should go through the EEOC. Pay, safety, retaliation, leave, and hostile work environment issues are often handled by state agencies, and choosing the wrong one or missing a deadline can delay or weaken your case.

State agencies that handle workplace complaints

Most states have their own civil rights or human rights agency, often called a Fair Employment Practices Agency. These agencies enforce state anti-discrimination laws and frequently offer longer filing deadlines than federal law. Filing with a state agency may also dual-file your complaint with the EEOC, preserving your federal rights without a second filing.

Deadlines shown are typical and can vary by claim type. Always confirm the current deadline with the agency. Links go to independent government websites that Caged Bird HR does not control. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
